MORSHED MANNAN

OF Counsel

Mr. Mannan is currently  employed by the Company Law Department, Leiden Law School, Leiden University, The Netherlands as a fully-funded Meijers PhD candidate. He conducts research on workers’ and platform cooperatives, corporate governance, freedom of establishment and, since 2017, blockchain technology and artificial intelligence. His doctoral research tentatively titled, ‘Economic Democracy in the Platform Age’, investigates business structures that may be used to democratize the platform economy. During the course of his doctoral work, Mr. Mannan was a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge (August 2019) and a research fellow at the  Institute for the Cooperative Digital Economy at The New School. In addition, he presented papers at conferences across four continents. He is also a lecturer in Leiden Advanced LLM and International Business Law LLB programmes, teaching courses on worker representation in the workplace, freedom of establishment and comparative corporate governance. He has also served on the Exam Commission of Leiden Law School’s Advanced LLM programmes between 2016-2020. He is currently a section editor of the Internet Policy Review for its Glossary of Distributed Technologies, as well as a contributor and coordinator of the Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAO) Model Law drafting project, led by Dr. Primavera de Filippi & the Coalition of Automated Legal Applications (COALA). During his stint in academia since 2015, Mr. Mannan has published in leading peer-reviewed journals and books in the fields of law, philosophy and technology, demonstrating his capacity to work on complex, interdisciplinary research projects. He has also co authored a company law textbook entitled Freedom of Establishment for Companies in Europe (EU-EEA), published by Ars Aequi in the Netherlands, during this period.
